When I first started using scent to practice self care, I wasn't sure what to expect. To be honest, as a full-time caregiver to my mom, I didn't really understand what taking time for myself could even look like. Y'all caregivers out there who know KNOW!
As I began to explore different scents and incorporate them into my routine, I realized that the act of taking the time to connect with myself through scent was not only freeing, but also deeply meaningful. Here are the top tier ways that scent has improved my mental health.

Top Tier Way #1
When I'm feeling stressed or anxious, taking a moment to choose a calming scent can be incredibly helpful in shifting my mood. Whether it's lavender oil to promote relaxation or citrus to boost energy levels, using essential oils has become one of my go-to coping mechanisms. Oh but recently your girl discovered the aromatherapy of shower steamers and my life has been completely transformed. If you're looking for a way to help you relax, I highly recommend giving this shower tablet a try.
Once I put this tablet on the floor of my bathtub it releases essential oils that help me melt into a deep relaxation. There also seems to be a peppermint affect that has been doing wonders for my adult allergies. My favorite scents so far have been with Grapefruit, Citrus, and Cocoa Orange. These scents anchor me in the present moment and is such a good reminder to slow down and breathe.
CAREGIVER TIP: Even if you don't have time for a full aromatherapy session, simply applying a few drops of oil to your wrists or neck can make a world of difference.
Top Tier Way #2
Every morning, I start my day by taking a moment for myself. After a 20 minute yoga session, I choose my outfit for the day, taking care to pick something that makes me feel good. I do my hair and makeup (aka lipstick and eyebrows), taking the time to really focus on how I want to look and feel. And then, I choose my scent. I have always been particular about scent; but as I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate the role that scent can play in our lives. Now, when I choose a perfume, I take a moment to ask myself what mood I'm hoping to tap into. Do I want to feel confident? Sexy? Playful? Relaxed? Once I've decided on the feeling I'm hoping to achieve, I can narrow down my options and choose a scent that will help me get there.
No matter what, taking the time to apply my scent is always part of my self-care routine. It's a way of taking a moment for myself, of focusing on my wellbeing, and of tapping into my emotions. And for me, that's essential.
CAREGIVER TIP: Even if it's just a couple of minutes - make space to step away from the chaos of your day-to-day life and focus solely on your wellbeing, it is invaluable.

Just me or nah but there's something about scented candles that just creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Maybe it's the soft light they give off, or the way they make a space feel cozier. Whatever the reason, there's no denying that scented candles can really change the atmosphere of a room. And that's not just a vibe - studies have shown that certain scents can actually help to reduce stress and promote feelings of well-being.
When I light a scented candle, I can instantly feel the stresses of my day melting away. That is why I love the ByRaSynclair line of homemade candles. Each candle is made with a unique blend of essential oils that create a scent that is both relaxing and uplifting. I am so grateful to have found a product that helps me practice self-care in such a simple, yet effective way.
CAREGIVER TIP: Scented candles can help you relax after a long day, boost your energy levels, or simply make your home smell great. So next time you're looking for a way to change the vibe of your space or boost to your mental health, reach for a scented candle. You won't be disappointed.
In the end, practicing self care through scent has helped me feel more deserving of care, while also reminding me that it's OK to slow down and give myself a little extra love and attention every now and then. Scent has become one of my favorite ways to reconnect with myself when life gets hectic and overwhelming; it's an experience that reminds me that even in my darkest moments, I deserve nothing less✨
Until next time, xo Nikki 💋
